Catalog Submissions

Anyone with a Brick Owl account can contribute and help improve our catalog of Lego items. If you're submissions are approved, you will earn Catalog Points, which can be exchanged for prizes! Different Catalog submissions are worth different amounts of points, for more information visit the Catalog Points page.

This help page aims to explain all the different types of catalog submission you can make and gives you some tips to increase the chances that your submission will be approved.

You make most catalog submissions by finding the Lego item you want in the Catalog, and clicking the 'Edit' tab that should appear when you are logged in. You can then fill in as much or as little of the data for that item as you want and then click the 'Submit for Approval' button. For each piece of data that is approved points will automatically be added to your account.  When editing Lego parts you need to edit the part with no colour attached e.g. Plate 1 x 2 not Blue Plate 1 x 2.  However if you want to upload a picture of a Lego part, add it's weight or Lego Item number, you must select the colour, i.e. Blue Plate 1 x 2.

At the bottom of the catalog edit section is a box for you to write notes about your submission, you can use this if you think your submission needs a little explanation, if you want us to add new colours to the drop down menu's or if you've got some suggestions for new attributes. We will see your notes with your submissions after you have clicked the 'Submit for Approval' button.

The different submissions you can make are:

Item Indentification

Base Name

This will become the name of the Lego item, for Lego parts it should be the name of the parent item and not have any colour assigned to it. You do not need to write the category or the word LEGO in the name. Minifigure parts should start 'Minifigure Head', 'Minifigure Torso', or 'Minifigure Legs' as appropriate. Friends parts should start 'Friends Heads', 'Friends Torso', 'Friends Legs' as appropriate. Names should be descriptive enough to be unique but should be as concise as possible, they do not need to describe the part fully. Any unused information from the previous name should be put as a tag.

Lego Item No.

This is Lego's internal number to identify items. The Lego Item number is colour specific so for Lego parts you must choose the colour of the Lego part before you enter your submission. You can often find the Lego Item Number by looking in an instruction booklet that lists the part at the back, a good way to do this is to click on the Sets Tab to see which Lego Sets your chosen part comes in and then visit that Set and view the instructions. The Lego Item Number is usually 6-7 digits long. It should not be confused with the Design Id which is usually 4 digits long. Unlike the Design Id the Lego Item Number is not normally found on the Lego part itself.

Item Attributes

Gender

You can mark Lego items as Male, Female, Unisex or N/A. Most Lego items should be set to the default N/A, however Lego Minifigures and Lego Minifigure body parts can have a gender associated with him. Unisex should be used when the minfigure could be either male or female.

Sides Printed

You can enter the number of sides the Lego item has printing on. For example, most minfigure heads have a printed face on one side and they would have a value of '1'. When you have dual sided heads for example, happy on the front, scared on the back they would have a value of '2'. The minifigure head Lego part is also availiable with no printing on and would have a value of '0'. A Lego Set meanwhile should stick with the default of N/A.

Facial Expression

Some Lego parts have faces printed on them, for example, a smiling brick or minfigure heads. You can assign a facial expression to these items, to say what emotion the face is conveying, try to select an expression from the drop down menu but if an appropriate emotion is not present, submit a new suggested emotion in the Optional Note field at the bottom and we may add it to the list.

Facial Hair Type

This catagory is mainly for male minifigure's and minifigure heads, you can select from the drop down menu the type of facial hair that best describes that on the minifigure.  If there is more than one type for example, Stubble and Moustache, try to pick the dominant type. If you feel the this is not possible or that the facial hair type is not in the drop down menu, leave us a message in the Optional Note field at the bottom of the page.

Facial Hair Color

This catagory is mainly for male minifigure's and minifigure heads, you can select from the drop down menu the color of the facial hair that corresponds to the facial hair specified in the facial hair type field. For example, if the minifigure has orange stubble and a black moustache, and the facial hair type was chosen as moustache, you would choose the color black for facial hair color. If you feel the correct color is not availiable in the drop down menu, leave us a message in the Optional Note field at the bottom of the page.

Eye Color

When a Lego part has eye's printed on them, you can enter the eye color in this field by selecting the appropriate colour from the drop down menu. If the eye colour necessary is not in the list, tell us what the appropriate eye color should be in the Optional Note field at the bottom of the page.

Eyebrow Color

Lip Color

Material Type

Most Lego parts are made of ABS Plastic, but Lego also make items with many other materials. If the Lego item has one main material type, you can enter it in this field. Composite items such as Lego Sets and Mindstorm bricks, should have a material type of N/A.

Year

If you are aware of the year in which the Lego item was first produced or availiable for sale enter it in this field. Please enter the four digit year, i.e. 1978 rather than just 78.

Item Measurements

This section allows you to enter the dimensions and weight of the Lego item. Check out the Stud Dimensions Guide Help page for more information on how to enter Lego item sizes.

Item Picture

Image

Pictures are very important, anyone can upload a picture to an item that does not currently have an image, to replace an image that is of inferior quality or to add an alternate image often taken to give a different viewpoint of the same item. The main image item is the Primary Image and all other pictures count as Alternate Images. Press the Browse button to locate the image on your computer, then the Upload button to upload the image to Brick Owl, remember to click the Submit for Approval button at the bottom of the page when you are done. Your image will appear if it is approved, to get the best chance of your image being approved please visit our Catalog Images help page. Please note, any images submitted must be taken by you or are official Lego images.

Item Category

Other

In this section you can request an item for deletion or leave us a note.  Item's can be deleted if you think the item is duplicated elsewhere in the catalog or simply does not belong in the catalog, it is probably best to leave a note to inform us of your reason. Notes can be left about any comments that arise when editing the catalog. For example, you may want to inform us of any changes you feel may be necessary to the edit form, such as adding a new eye colour or type of statistic. Or maybe you feel you need to explain why you have given an item a particular tag, et cetera.

Remember, always press the blue 'Submit for Approval' button when you have finished adding item information.
